Most residence procedures now start online on the ANEF platform (administration numérique des étrangers en France), but you still need the spoken and written French to follow a convocation, answer at a guichet, and complete your dossier. Begin your renewal at least two months before your card expires.
While your file is processed you receive a récépissé or an attestation de prolongation d’instruction, which lets you stay and often work legally during the wait.
