When you first settle in France on a long-stay basis, the OFII (Office français de l’immigration et de l’intégration) invites you to sign the contrat d’intégration républicaine, the CIR. It includes a civic training and, if your French is below A2, a proposed language course aimed at reaching A2.
At your first appointment you take a positioning test (test de positionnement) that measures your level, and you may have a medical visit.
The civic training (formation civique) lasts about 24 hours over four days and covers the values, institutions, rights and duties of the Republic, and practical life in France. The language training, when prescribed, comes in packages such as 100, 200 or 400 hours, with a special longer track for learners who have had little schooling.
