Être is the most used verb in French. You need it to say who you are, what you do, where you are, and what something is like: Je suis étudiant. Elle est française. Nous sommes à Paris.
Use être for identity (Je suis Nirmal), nationality and profession (Elle est indienne, il est professeur — no article before the profession), description (C'est grand !), and location (Nous sommes au bureau).
Watch the pronunciation: the -s in suis, es, sommes, êtes, sont is silent, and tu es and il est sound identical — context tells them apart.

Avoir means « to have », but French also uses it where English uses « to be »: for age (J'ai 25 ans), hunger (J'ai faim), thirst (J'ai soif), and being right or cold. Mastering avoir early unlocks dozens of daily sentences.
These expressions never use être, even though English says « to be ». They cover physical states (faim, soif, chaud, froid, sommeil), judgments (raison, tort), feelings (peur, envie), and needs (besoin de). Because they are noun-based, they intensify with très only indirectly: say j'ai très faim — never « je suis très faim ».

Every French noun is masculine or feminine, and the article must match. The definite articles (the) are le, la, l', les; the indefinite articles (a/an, some) are un, une, des. Learn each new noun together with its article — that is how the gender sticks.
Le and la become l' before a vowel sound (l'école, l'hôtel). Les and des are the plural forms for every gender.

Gender is not random everywhere: many endings are reliable signals. Nouns in -tion, -té, -ie, -ure are usually feminine (la nation, la liberté, la vie). Nouns in -age, -ment, -eau, -isme are usually masculine (le fromage, le moment, le bureau).

Always memorize article + noun as one block: la maison, le livre.
