This lesson develops the DELF B2 speaking tasks into a more connected B-level performance. The target is no longer only accuracy in one line, but a short response with sequence, support, and controlled progression. The learner is expected to sound more organized as well as more accurate.

It assumes the B1 habit of giving reasons, examples, and a clearer line of structure. Keep the foundation visible, but start shaping the response so the listener can follow your logic from opening to closing line.

Grammar focus

The passive voice and its alternatives

The passive moves the object into the spotlight: La mairie a rénové le pont → Le pont a été rénové (par la mairie). Formation: être (in the right tense) + past participle, which agrees with the subject: La décision a été prise. Les mesures seront annoncées demain.

When French prefers something else

French uses the passive less than English. Three live alternatives: on + active verb (On a volé mon vélo — my bike was stolen), the pronominal passive for general truths (Ce vin se boit frais — this wine is drunk chilled), and se faire + infinitive when the subject suffers/causes the action (Il s'est fait voler son téléphone).

Only direct objects can become passive subjects. French cannot passivize the indirect object: « I was given a book » must become On m'a offert un livre.

  • Agent introduced by par (action) or de (state/feeling): Le château est entouré de jardins.
  • Tense lives on être: est construit / a été construit / sera construit / vient d'être construit.
  • No agent needed? Prefer on: On parle français ici.

Watch out

Passivizing indirect objects as in English: « J'ai été donné un livre ».

On m'a donné un livre.

Donner à quelqu'un — the person is indirect and cannot become the passive subject.

Forgetting participle agreement: « La réunion a été reporté ».

La réunion a été reportée.

In the passive, the participle agrees with the subject like an adjective.

Overusing the passive in speech.

In conversation, prefer on: On a réparé la route.

Heavy passives sound bureaucratic; on is the natural spoken equivalent.

Grammar focus

Concession and opposition: malgré, avoir beau, quoique, alors que

B2 argument requires fine-grained concession: malgré + noun (despite), bien que + subjunctive (although), avoir beau + infinitive (however much one…), alors que / tandis que + indicative (whereas), même si + indicative (even if).

Choosing by structure

The choice is structural before it is semantic: malgré takes a noun (malgré la pluie), bien que takes a subjunctive clause, même si takes an indicative clause, and avoir beau conjugates itself before an infinitive: Il a beau travailler, il ne progresse pas (however hard he works…).

Alors que and tandis que oppose two facts without surprise: Lui préfère la ville, alors que sa femme rêve de campagne. Pourtant adds the surprise: Le produit est cher, pourtant il se vend très bien.
