Forming and using it

Take the nous-form, drop -ons, add -ant: parlons → en parlant, finissons → en finissant, faisons → en faisant. Three irregulars: être → en étant, avoir → en ayant, savoir → en sachant. The implicit subject must be the main subject: En sortant du bureau, j'ai croisé Léa = I was leaving the office.

Simultaneity: Il téléphone en conduisant. (while driving — and it is illegal!)
Manner/means: Elle a progressé en pratiquant tous les jours.
Condition: En réservant tôt, vous payez moins cher.

Watch out

Letting the gérondif subject differ from the main subject: « En arrivant à la gare, le train est parti ».

Same subject required: En arrivant à la gare, j'ai vu le train partir.

The sentence literally says the train arrived at the station — a dangling participle.

Using the infinitive after en: « en manger ».

En + -ant form: en mangeant.

En is the only preposition followed by the participle, not the infinitive.

Translating « by + -ing » with « par »: « par pratiquant ».

Means/manner → en pratiquant.

Par + gerund does not exist in French.
